Considering how many year-end lists we’re trouncing through at the moment (our list is here), we figured it’d be a nice break to promote some folks that might not usually get a chance to rank and share their own, oh-so-holy Top 10s. So, I asked a huge -  like 50+ – group of friends, photographers, music pitchers, label heads, record store owners, DJs, designers, artists, writers, promoters, band managers and of course the bands themselves to share.

We have people associated with and/or responsible for the likes of Mount Analog, Gorilla v. Bear, MTV, Indigenous, MISHKA, Impose, Power of the Riff, Rolling Stone and more.

Bands include the likes of Gothic Tropic, Spook Houses, How to Dress Well, The Chain Gang of 1974, Youth Code, Hive Mind and those responsible for some of my favorite records of the year – Mish from White Lung, Jon from Cold Showers, Aaron and Indra of Peaking Lights and Grave Babies.

See you next year…

**NOTE: Many people submitted their lists “in no particular order.”  If the post isn’t numbered, it is in no particular order.

1-10 - Turbonegro – Sexual Harassment
The only record that mattered in 2012

RYAN GEORGE
Musician- Youth Code
Los Angeles

1. Silent Servant- Negative Fascination
Easily the finest release of the year. Listening to Juan’s post
punk influences leak through his trademark, bleak, minimal techno is
stunning to say the least. When this record goes on… it stays on.
Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

2. Wreathes- Odes
This one song by Wreathes… Breaking away from the monotonous drive
of textbook Neo-Folk, embracing emotional peaks and valleys. Totally
breathes new life into the genre. So epic.

3. No Paws- Healthy Men
New Order meets K-records. Give it a good listen and shed a tear or two.

4. Vatican Shadow- Ornamented Walls
To me, this is the record where Dominick finds his footing. Harsh
and Cold. Solid.

5. Believer/Law- The Task at Hand
The band I’m most excited to hear more from in 2013. Screamy
Industrial by hardcore kids. Perfecto.

SARA TAYLOR
Musician- Youth Code
Vacation Records
Los Angeles

1. Hoax – 3
Blistering aggressive hardcore from the East Coast. The way it should
be done 100%. Not only is every record this band has put out thus far
perfect, but their live show is not one to be missed by anybody who
has even a slight lust for passionate performance. Easily my #1 of the
year.

2. High on Fire – De Vermis Mysteriis
Hi. I love headbanging. This record is perfect for it. Literally perfect.

3. OM- Advaitic Songs
Beautiful, Somber, Heavy Chamber music from the other half of Sleep.
Dead Can dance type vibes, but on a whole darker level.

4. Cult of Youth ” Love Will Prevail”
If Douglas P still had some of the punk gusto he used to fly in
Crisis, and then took that to Death in June, it would probably sound
somewhat like this new Cult of Youth record. But he didn’t, so they
took my breath away this year by being so fucking hard without a
distortion pedal. It rules.

5. Pure Ground ” Daylight”
Since Chondritic released 5 million amazing tapes this year (Marshstepper, Kama Rupa, Brotman & Short) I couldn’t name all of them,
so I picked the Pure Ground tape. Minimal synth the way it should be done in the Modern Age. Right up there with the other torchbearers of
this scene- Pure Ground are poppy, bleak and pure.

DARYL BERG
Shine America
Los Angeles

Weighted out of 100 points

All of these are weighted equally except for the Japandroids. I also added some commentary because I usually like to read why other folks chose what they chose. To quote the Pixies, “IT’s EDUCATIONAL!”

Japandroids – Celebration Rock (19) – Just a fantastic indie rock record. Everything that indie rock used to stand for, before somehow it got morphed into chilled out poorly recorded bedroom electronica.

Nas – LIfe is Good (9)– Great beats, retro without sounding “old skool.”

Chromatics – Kill For Love (9) – See aforementioned bedroom electronica reference. The only one that actually decided that songs matter over style and those songs are really good, even if one of the best ones is a cover.

The Coup (9) Sorry to Bother You – Boots Riley is the funkiest man alive..and he wrote music for the Simpsons.

Nachtmystium – Silencing Machine (9) – My Bloody Valentine meets Jesu meets Black Metal. Its amazingly massive and epic and fantastic for a darkened airplane.

Cloud Nothings – Attack on Memory (9) – Great songwriting, great energy, if you miss On the Mouth or No Pocky For Kitty, this is your bag.

Diamond Rugs – Diamond Rugs (9) – Anything featuring the Black Lips is usually worthy of something. “Big God” on this is a phenomenal song.

Passion Pit – Gossamer (9) – Naysayers be damned. The guys writes incredible dance pop songs with lyrics that belong nowhere near dance pop. They turned a sad lament about a man unable to care for his family into a hit. Brilliant.

Diiv – Doused (9) Bedroom rock that actually has decent production and music that builds. I’d love to see what he can do with a bigger set of tools.he

Bob Mould – The Silver Age (9) Sounds like he found his amps and settings from Sugar, ripped off the knobs and let loose. A welcome return to form from an artist that means the world to me.

Honorable Mention: Neil Young – Psychedelic Pill. Not a great record, but “Ramada Inn” is one of the most beautiful, sadly compelling songs about aging love I’ve ever heard, written by a man who’s probably going through it as we speak.
