Celebrating the release of their debut record, Rad Times Xpress IV for Drag City, brand-new outfit Black Bananas brought their soul-skuzzing, dance-oriented garage sound to the Echo for a record-release show last week with the rather good Pink Mountaintops supporting. Formed from the ranks of RTX, the BB project is led by glammer Jennifer Herrema, who at her Echo set gorged on champagne and stage sway to produce a set that though was a fun sight to bounce around to, lacked much substance outside of well, the bang-faced singer’s reaction to the substance she was wrapped up in. Noisy and crunchy, the Black Bananas live show still definitely needs its kinks worked out and considering their supporting Sleigh Bells tour that starts this week, I wonder if they can get around to it that quick. Not one for absolutes, the group’s album material offers more promise- hear a tune below- so I’m not ultimately writing off these rotting fruits’ output just yet…
